After corresponding with Justin from New Mexico-based harsh/terror
ebm project Viscera Drip for some time after we were both made slightly
more famous by our positions on the Interbreeding IX compilation, I was
finally able to secure an interview through the elusive medium of so
called "electronic mail". Look for their exclusive track "Demons" to
appear on the Interbreeding IX: Kuru compilation in early January 2006.
For more information about Viscera Drip:
http://www.myspace.com/xvisceradripx They also have a page floating
in some veiled and unknown corner of the nebulous internet universe for
their remixes.
Introduce yourself; who are you, what do you do?
Mein Name ist Justin Thiele, andI write the music of Viscera Drip. I also work a full time job
as an assistant manager for a Walgreens store here in New Mexico. I'm
also trying really hard to learn the German language :)
What is Viscera Drip? Where did the name come from?
Originally Viscera Drip was a song I wrote for our first album Memento
Mori. Our project used to be called "Dead Air" but after finding out
there was a group already called that (that really sucked, mind you) I
changed it to Viscera Drip. I was reading an issue of Rue Morgue a long
time ago back when it was bi-monthly, around issue twenty something, and
there was a review about a film (honestly cannot recall what film or
issue this was, too long ago!) that said something along the lines of
"this film drips with viscera". Basically I wanted the name to be
original sounding, so that no one else would come up with it, so I went
with the song title I had.
What do you want to accomplish with/through music/Viscera Drip? What
CAN be accomplished through the medium of music?
Alot can be accomplished through the medium of music. Human beings are
fleshy bags of emotion, and sound can take emotions and amplify them or
decrease them.
My main goal with music is to create songs that I enjoy, and can listen
to myself over and over. I'm not tyring to accomplish anything new, just
expanding on what I enjoy.

What inspires you to make music?
It's fun and I love doing it? ;P Envy, Greed, and Pride compells me to
write. Most people might consider these horrible traits, but these same
people thrive by them without being aware of it. All three push me
forward, striving to be better....and film inspires me too.
What inspired the new album (What Demons May Come), and how is the
writing on this album different from your older stuff (Memento Mori,
etc)?
The main theme throughout this album is very similar to that of Memento
Mori. I think the reason why is because after I did Memento Mori I did
an album called Black Noise that touched upon a whole bunch of different
topics, and I hated it. I never listen to it and I think it's crap! Yet,
I love Memento Mori even though it was done on an eight track recorder
with no use of a computer or software. Every song was a different
chapter in a very disturbing journal, from a very sick man. I wanted to
go back to that concept, but have it updated. This time around it's
recorded on a computer and uses software with hardware. It is much more
dancier as a whole, than Memento Mori. The quality is definately a jump
up.
I am very excited to hear the new VD album, when are you planning on
releasing it and how?
Mid Feburary in 2007. I'm shopping it to Labels after it's mastered (by
X-Fusion-Music-Productions) and going from there. There is one label in
particular I'm mostly interested in, and if you go to my myspace site
you'll probably figure it out.
What is the most genuinely evil/disturbing song you have ever written
and why? Why did you choose to write it?
Most of the songs I write are considered horrifying after the lyrics are
found out. Kidnapping, Torture, Rape, Pedophilia, Necrophilia,
Murder.....Most of the time these views are wrote lyrically in the third
person, as an observer, in order to sicken and offend those that are not
aware, and delight those that are. And other times I'm so sickened
myself that the lyrics are wrote in first person (mine) point of view,
such as the topic of pedophiles. But virtually all these songs are
inspired by my obsession with horror films, serial killers, the occult,
and the paranormal.
How is the industrial scene down there in New Mexico?
I wasn't aware there was a scene here! I keep hearing there is one in
Alburqueque, but I go there from time to time and have yet to see it.
How has living in the (what I assume to be a) barren desert of death
and chaos that is New Mexico influenced you personally/musically?
Well, I've lived all over the US, and Ive found all places to be very
similar here in the USA. Too many people everywhere.
There is ALOT of Meth addicts around here, and it makes me want to start
blowing heads off sometimes, but I don't normally let where I live
dictate my music. The scenarios I sing about happen everywhere, all the
time, throughout the entire world (or are completely fictional). Some
would probably like to think it was just limited to Mexico City, but
violence, crime, and poverty are human traits that exists everywhere
hearts continue to beat.
It seems to me that these days a lot of bands are being signed with
little to no history (i.e. previous releases/albums/bands, etc). Do you
feel that having done a bunch of demos and albums before being signed is
helpful?
I do. Mostly because you've gained experience and grown with your music.
I can't imagine doing one album and being satisfied enough with it to
release it on a label!
What is the future of Viscera Drip and EBM music in generally? Where
is there left to go as a genre?
Viscera Drip will continue making music until the creators die.
Electronic Body Music is a funny name to me, but was a fairly accurate
description for Front 242's music I suppose. But really, it's just
electronic music....it'll always be changing in all kinds of different
directions. Technology has allowed music to go anywhere it wants...and
it will go everywhere I am sure.
I gather that a lot of people think that Terror EBM is a joke or a
passing fad. What causes you to stick with this genre of music? What do
you think the future of Terror EBM is?
Kind of like how people think the genre of Horror in films is a
joke? Some people think horror is stupid becuase of films like, well,
pretty much all the remakes lately. But then you have the "comedy
horror" , any type of comedy is going to suck the horror completely
away. I'm making parallels here ;) But there will always be the films
that absolutley terrify us, like Cannibal Holocaust, to remind
us....good horror does exist, and it will always be remembered! terror
ebm, neo-folk, black metal, classical, film scores....they all appeals
to me. Terror EBM is the most fun to make though! Making people dance to
lyrics like "holding my semen, for her last breath" is fucking
priceless.
What do you think of the use of sampling in music?
I think it's great! The first time I heard sampling that made me really
notice it's potential is when Rachel let me hear an NCC song with
dialouge from the film Gummo. I was thinking , wait a second, people are
allowed to do this??? This is fucking fantastic! And then I found out
hip-hop artists have been doing it for centuries haha!
What would you like to see happen in industrial music or in the
scene? What can be done to get to that point?
I think it's fine how it is. I also liked it how it was. And I'm sure
I'll like what it becomes. To me it's just music, love it or hate it.
I know that you have seen just about every horror movie in existence.
What are the best ones out there that people probably haven’t seen?
August Underground, Dario Argento's Opera (the uncut version!),
Murder-Set-Pieces (it's being mainstream released January 7th by Lions
Gate but cut down to an R rating, so try to find the original release if
you can), Naboer (aka Next Door), Dust Devil, The Church, Nacho Cerda's
Aftermath, NecromantiK....there is so many good horror films out there,
you just have to find them mostly for yourself. You might hate the
titles I just listed, whereas someone else could love them. It's just a
matter of opinion and taste really. As with all art!
What are the best books out there?
All the short stories of H.P. Lovecraft of course!
list of some books: Book Four, Ring, Spiral, Loop, The Dark Tower
series, Exquisite Corpse, Perfume, The Satanic Bible, Beyond Good and
Evil, The Girl Next Door, The Book Of The Law, Seth Speaks,
Conversations With God book 1-3, The Emmanuelle Books (hard to find
now), American Psycho, Less Than Zero, The Rules Of Attraction. The next
book I'm reading is Paradise Lost by John Milton, Ive heard many good
things about it throughout my life and havent actually read it yet.
What are the top 10 albums that inspire Viscera Drip?

What is currently on the Viscera Drip agenda?

remixes currently for Terracorpse and Negative Kontrol. Other than that,
I'd like to relax for once!
Any last words?
Dan from Worms Of The Earth is one HOT mofo! ooooooohhhhhhhhh yeeeah!
Thank you very much for taking the time to do this interview, I wish
you much success in the future!
