Worms of the Earth
    Wounds of the Earth

a polluted sun rises in the hazy dawn
our cities, collapsing monoliths of our own conceit,
the capitalist juggernaut sprawl of dead metropolis ebbs away in the wind
the filthy scrap metal takes the place of our hearts
and the dust is our tears
I watch the rotting buildings stand in a solitary agony against the rusted skyline.
birds fall from that sky…choking on the smoke we too breath
as we harvest the last of earths withered resources
depleted of all that was once was, the land itself begins to oxidize.
the last of our water has turned to acid, dead arid waste consumes our crops before us
the cracked ground a final reminder of how we ourselves have become broken in our quest to achieve absolute dominion.
smog has coalesced with flesh and corrosion
and we are the cursed denizens that must walk this abomination
walls crumble at my touch, the dust fills my lungs
I know that we will soon reach the end
the sky above has become a blackened vortex devouring all light propelled upward
the red pulsing lights of long abandoned towers and the hum of generators surround me
my eyes adjust slowly to the sandstorms that eat away the last of our colossal structures
our throats parched and any tangible method of subsistence has long been forgotten

humans have at last left their filthy marks on this planet
these are the wounds of the earth
